The Purge

What if crime didn´t exist besides only once a year? What if the government had decided to make one day and one day only to a day when everything is permitted, even to commit crime? To get rid of all your rage? This is what they have done in this movie and they call it; The Purge.

This movie has it´s originality. Well played, nice footage and pretty good dialog. But there is something missing. Something important.

The family that we get introduced to in the beginning of the movie are wealthy and the father James Sandin, played by Ethan Hawk, is at the peak of his career which his neighbors are a little bit jealous over. This is something that the movie will be played on later. The Purge is arriving and the family is getting ready to the annual celebration of it. As if it was like any festival anywhere. But something goes wrong and suddenly they are one of them that will get a taste of the madness called The Purge. And that´s it. That´s what the movie is all about.

Ethan Hawk is a really good actor and a respectable one but I don´t feel that this movie makes him justice. And Lena Headey is playing his wife Mary Sandin. You may remember her from Zack Snyders movie 300 there she played Queen Gorgo. She´s doing a fine job and plays her role very well. But there is one actor that stands out from the other bigger names and that is Max Burholder that plays the son of the family. He is really great and to see him act really makes the film worth seeing. I believe we will see more of him in the future.

But all of this ain´t enough. This movie has it´s moments but It does not go all the way. Director James DeMonaco tries to scare us and build up tension, but in my opinion, he does not succeed. Don´t get me wrong. He´s a great director and he have made a beautiful movie but somewhere along the way he lost the film's soul. For me this is only a one timer. I will probably never see this film again. But still I recommend you to do it because it has some entertainment value after all. If nothing else, you will at least see one of tomorrow's stars in action, Max Burholder.
